Paying for care
Insurance, out-of-network, and what “covered” really means
How to read your benefits and what to ask before admission.
Verify benefits in writing
Ask the facility and your insurer what level of care is authorized, for how many days, and what your deductible and out-of-pocket maximum are.
In-network vs. out-of-network
Out-of-network care can still be partly reimbursed. Ask for the plan's out-of-network benefits and keep records of every call.
Parity protections
Federal parity law generally requires coverage for mental health and substance use treatment that is comparable to medical coverage. If a claim is denied, you can appeal.
