How to know if a treatment center is actually good

Questions to ask and signs to look for before you commit to a program.

Start with accreditation

Look for accreditation from the Joint Commission or CARF, and verify it directly with the accrediting body rather than relying on a logo on a website.

Confirm the state license for the facility and the licenses of its clinical staff.

Ask about the clinical team

Ask who provides care day to day, how many licensed clinicians are on staff, and what medical coverage exists overnight.

A good program can explain its treatment approach plainly and cite evidence-based methods.

Ask about the day you leave

Discharge planning should begin early. Ask how the program connects people to outpatient care, sober living, and peer support near home.
