Addiction treatment for veterans: a complete guide

How military experience shapes addiction and recovery, what veteran-informed care looks like, and how VA and TRICARE benefits fit in.

Written by the Specialty Rehabs editorial team · Updated

Why veterans may need specialized care

Veterans can face higher rates of conditions that travel with substance use, including PTSD, depression, chronic pain and traumatic brain injury. Military culture — self-reliance, stoicism, loyalty to the unit — can also make asking for help harder. Programs experienced with service members understand both the clinical needs and the culture.

What to look for

  • Clinicians experienced with PTSD and military trauma, and trauma-focused therapies
  • Treatment for co-occurring mental health conditions in the same plan
  • Chronic pain management that does not default to opioids
  • Veteran peers or staff who have served
  • Help coordinating VA, TRICARE and other military benefits
  • Family programming for spouses and children

VA care and community care

The Department of Veterans Affairs provides substance use treatment through VA medical centers, and in some cases can authorize care from community providers. Eligibility and authorization rules vary, so start by contacting your local VA facility or the VA benefits line. TRICARE and private insurance may also cover treatment; ask any program to verify your benefits.

Crisis support

The Veterans Crisis Line is available any hour: dial 988 and then press 1, text 838255, or chat online. In an emergency, call 911.

Questions to ask a program

  • How does it treat PTSD and trauma alongside addiction?
  • Does it accept TRICARE or coordinate with VA community care?
  • Does it offer medications for addiction treatment?
  • Are there peer or staff members with military experience?
  • What aftercare connections exist near my home?
